Who we are
Gathering Allies Society is made up entirely of volunteers. We are dedicated activists who support Indigenous resurgence projects because we are aware of the history and present context of ongoing colonial violence towards Indigenous communities. We therefore support Indigenous peoples' self-determination in decolonizing. We know that as non-Indigenous allies we must defer to movements that are led by Indigenous people, particularly women and non-gender conforming people, understanding that those most affected by colonization are in the best position to know what is needed to address it. We support the self-determined healing of Indigenous communities and their reoccupation movements to protect their lands and waters.
We Commit to:
- Act only with explicit permission and informed consent of the Indigenous people we work with
- Frequently assess whether GAS support is considered effective and useful by the communities we are allied with
- Respond meaningfully to feedback from the communities we work with
- Work under an anti-oppressive framework that is inclusive of all peoples regardless of race, economic status, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, or age
